Term 2 Weeks 7-9
The End of a Great Term
The End of a Great Term
Dear Parents and
Girls,
Can you believe
it’s already the last week of Term Two? What a busy term we have had!
By the time we
reach the end of another big term at Danebank, the children will certainly be
ready for a holiday. Some have been unwell in recent weeks, with a few children
sick with colds, so we are hoping that the break will make all the difference.
We pray that all children will have a safe, relaxing and enjoyable holiday and
that they will return, ready for the challenges and opportunities of a new
term.
This will be the
final newsletter for the term. We will conclude the term on Friday with an End
of term Chapel service. This will be held at 11:45am in the Danebank Performing
Arts Centre. Parents and Friends are welcome to join us as we give thanks to
God for a successful Term. School will conclude at 12:30pm on Friday 23rd
June with a teacher on duty until 1:00pm. Out of School Hours Care will be
operating on this day and applications are available at the Junior School
office. If your child is normally booked on a Friday there is no further
charge.
What a beautiful mid
semester break it is going to be. We pray that you and your family have the
chance to enjoy the outdoors and the crisp winter weather. We are encouraging
the children to keep a Holiday Journal and to do some whale watching at Botany
National Park, Kurnell as the whales have started their annual migration as
they head north for warmer waters. Our prayers are with those families who are
finding things difficult at the moment. Perhaps there are difficult decisions
to be made, the challenge of work combined with the pressures of everyday
business, the relentless nature of jobs, activities, demands of family life, or
just being worn out and not feeling well.
May we encourage you to
look to God whose love and grace sustains us. God is with you and for you.
I look up to the
mountains—
where does my help come
from?
My help comes from the
Lord,
who made heaven and
earth!
He will not let you
stumble;
the one who watches
over you will not slumber.
Indeed, he who watches
over us all never slumbers or sleeps.
The Lord himself
watches over you!
The Lord stands beside
you as your protective shade.
The sun will not harm
you by day, nor the moon at night.
The Lord keeps you from
all harm and watches over your life.
The Lord keeps watch
over you as you come and go,
both now and forever.
Psalm 121
A reminder that all
students will resume for Term 3 on Tuesday 18th July, with a
beginning of term Chapel Service. Parents are welcome to our Chapel service.
Enjoy life to the
full.
Kind regards,
Mrs Lena Cooper and
Mrs Alison Larkin
Learning in Year 1
What an exciting
semester for Year 1! We have had so many great learning experiences and had
such fun. The students have showed so much love for learning this semester.
They have displayed curiosity, empathy and enthusiasm through participation in
class discussion, involvement in tasks and participating in excursions and
projects. They have all showed huge amounts of persistence and focus, while
keeping their amazing positive and fun personalities shining through.
Life in Year 1 by our students about all of
the amazing things they have experienced in Semester 1.
Firstly, we would
like you to know that we’ve been reading some Australian Aboriginal stories.
One of them is called the ‘What You Count: Then and Now’ and it is about the
traditional Aboriginal items compared against modern items. We have also read
‘In Your Dreams.’ It’s a historical story and it makes us feel all different
types of emotions when we read it. As part of our study, we created Aboriginal
inspired artworks. We have been looking at dot paintings in Bronwyn Bancroft’s
story ‘Why I Love Australia’. The student’s Indigenous Australian inspired
artworks have been displayed in our classrooms and look fabulous!
We also have been
attending Infants Chapel and we have been studying inspirational women in the
Bible such as Esther, Rahab and Lydia. We sing songs and smile heaps.
In Physical
Education we learned how to complete various skipping routines. Girls were
enthralled by the visit by the Loftus Leapers in week 7 and hope to share their
new skipping tricks with you.
This week in Maths
we have been studying Coins and how to recognise different Australian coins. We
also completed Problem Solving tasks. Some of the problems were quite
challenging but it was still a lot of fun. We are developing our Growth Mindset
to persevere at things even though they may be hard.
And finally, In
HSIE we’ve been looking at Families and Workers in the Community. Girls loved
dressing up in various uniforms and pretending to be workers at our recent
excursion to Wannabees Play Town.
Year 1 is the Best!

Year 1
HSIE excursion to Wannabees Family Play Town
Year 1 enjoyed
their excursion to Wannabees Play Town for our
HSIE unit of work on ‘Families’ and ‘Workers in the Community’. Students loved
role playing and exploring the various professions of people who live in our
community. Year 1 had a wonderful time wearing different worker’s uniforms and
using various tools to dramatise their occupations. Students dressed up as fire
fighters, chefs, hair dressers, construction workers, postal workers, nurses,
doctors and police officers. Judging by the laughter and the sounds of
students’ happy conversations on the bus ride upon our return school, all were
thoroughly entertained. Many girls commented “I loved dressing up in the
different outfits and pretending to be different workers.”
Literature lesson
on ‘The Magic Gelato Churn’
Year 1 researched
the gelato making process this week as part of our Literature and HSIE unit of
work on ‘Workers in the Community.’ All students read the story ‘The Magic
Gelato Churn’ and enjoyed learning about the original gelato making process in
Italy as well as the modern gelato making methods. Students were all amazed to
discover there are over 150 gelato flavours created by Pure Gelato factory at
Croydon Park. Some students agreed that they’d love to be on a tasty mission to
try all the flavours! We concluded the unit by sampling delicious mini gelatos!
Yummo!
Thank you to our
amazing Parent Reading Helpers!
A very big thank
you also goes to our amazing Reading Parents who have come in each week
(sometimes twice a week!) to help our students. Students have enjoyed reading
to our parent helpers and have had a very successful and rewarding semester.
This has been a great opportunity for our students to improve in their reading.
Both staff and
students are very appreciative of the parents’ time and effort. We would like
to continue the program next term. If you would like to be part of the parent
reading helpers group on either Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday mornings, please
inform Mrs Cooper or Mrs Larkin. Parent Reading begins at 9:10am until 9:50am
on those mornings.
Keep reading over
the holidays!
Gray House Charity Day
Gray House recently
held their charity day to raise money for CMS (Church Missionary Society). The
work of CMS is to reach gospel-poor people, equip Christian leaders and engage
churches in cross-cultural mission. The girls were encouraged to donate a gold
coin for the privilege of wearing ‘crazy socks and beanies’. They were also able
to enter a guessing competition to estimate the number of lollies in a jar. There
was an amazing array of socks and beanies and we were able to raise $750 to
donate to CMS. A great effort!
Premier’s
Reading Challenge
This week was the
children’s last week of borrowing from the library for the term. We always
stress that holidays are not a holiday from reading. Far from it, it is
imperative that the children keep up their reading, so that they don’t fall
behind. More importantly, it is an excellent opportunity for them to read
widely for enjoyment as they relax at home. Mrs Jamieson assisted them in
selecting books that will be ideal for extending their reading skills.
All students are
reminded to use the coming school holidays as a chance to enter books online.
Jump Rope for Heart
Year 1 enjoyed watching
a performance by the mighty Loftus Leapers from Loftus Public School. Students
were impressed by their skipping performance and many jumping tricks.
Over the last four
weeks of Sport, Year 1 students participated in the Jump Rope for Heart
program. This was a great opportunity for your daughter to learn new skills and
develop her fitness as well as raise money for the Heart Foundation.
The ‘Jump Off’ day
was held on Thursday 22nd June. Each child was challenged to jump
for a number of minutes, that number being their age.
Students have been
encouraged to skip as part of their ‘homework.’ You can also support her by
helping her raise funds for the Heart Foundation. This is optional.
Students were given
brochures in Sports class. Fundraising will be completed online
only. You will need to go to the Heart Foundation website and register
her and make sure you join her to Danebank Primary School.
Healthy Food
It has been
pleasing to see that many children are eating a healthy recess snack and lunch.
Thank you to all the parents who go into much effort to ensure that they
provide healthy foods for their daughter. Remember to ‘eat the colours of the
rainbow!’
