Welcome Back
Welcome back to our second term for 2017. We hope that all children have had a restful break. There are many highlights this term including Danebank’s Autumn Fair, Mothers’ Day celebrations, excursion to Wannabees Play Town for our HSIE unit on ‘Families, Past and Present’ and Workers in the Community', excursion to Monkey Baa Theatre for 'Diary of a Wombat', Stage 1 Maths Fun Day and more.
As you read this week’s blog, we are sure that you will be amazed by the wealth and diversity of learning experiences, events and opportunities that the students and also parents will be engaged in. As we contemplate all that we are about to undertake in the next nine weeks, we am incredibly thankful for the dedication of our Specialist Teachers whether in PE, ICT, Music, Christian Education, Japanese and the amazing enthusiasm shown by our students. The many opportunities that your children enjoy are only possible because of this brilliant team of people. We are all looking forward to another ‘action-packed’ and exciting term.
Excursion to Hazelhurst Art Gallery
Year 1 thoroughly enjoyed their excursion to Hazelhurst Regional Art Gallery on Thursday. They loved viewing the colourful Art exhibition. The exhibition is a colourful fusion of art, design and fashion, referencing Louise Olsen and Stephen Ormandy’s iconic design label Dinosaur Designs.
Year 1 enjoyed going on an Art Trail through Hazelhurst Art Gallery and Art Making in the studios. Students had the opportunity to engage and explore different media through printmaking, ceramics, mixed media, painting and drawing. A great time was enjoyed by all!

What’s Happening in Year 1
In Year 1, we’ve had an extremely busy and exciting time settling into Term 2. We have started our new HSIE program, ‘Families, Past and Present’. We’ve explored the use of many resources including fiction and non-fiction books, photos from olden day families as well as the internet to compare families of the past to present day families. Our lesson included lots of discussion, brainstorming, collaboration and organisation of information. Each student was given the task of researching their family tree, and choosing and interviewing someone special from their own family regarding their childhood and family experiences when they were growing up. The recorded interviews have proven to be a valuable teaching and learning resource, not to mention the fun that the children have had watching and sharing them with others.
In Science, students studied the difference in changing states of food. We investigated the difference between cooked and uncooked spaghetti. At the end of the lesson, students completed the challenge of building the strongest and tallest Spaghetti tower using marshmallows and uncooked spaghetti.!

In Mathematics, students have been working on improving their individual skills and knowledge focusing on Subtraction, making equal groups in Multiplication and mastering the Problem Solving strategy of Making a table or a Chart. This is taught through lots of mathematical games and experiences followed up with some written tasks. What a fun way to learn mathematical concepts!
Anzac Service
Beginning the term on the day after Anzac Day was a great opportunity to remember those who fought in the wars of our past, who sacrificed so much for the freedoms that we share today and the peaceful country in which we live. Our Junior prefects did a great job in leading this service. Thank you to Mr Normand for once again playing the bugle so well as we listened to The Last Post and the Reveille.

This day is one of the compulsory school days that students are required to attend so we look forward to seeing you all there to experience the great day.
Notes were handed to students earlier in the week seeking parent volunteers to give one hour of their time to help run the stall on the day. The stall will operate from 8am to 4pm. Please volunteer your time and return the BBQ Stall slip to school asap to assist with the organisation of the Year 1 BBQ stall. We appreciate any help that you can provide.
A big hank you to our Year 1 Stall Convenors, Mrs Meri Ninic, Mrs Vanessa Mansour, Mrs Hassan and Mrs Twyman and to the brilliant team of parent helpers who so generously donate their time to support our wonderful school!
Afternoon Pick Up
We are in need of volunteers for our afternoon pick up service, especially on Monday afternoons. This service offers parents the opportunity to pick up their daughters safely, without the need to park and walk into the school. For this to work smoothly, we need parents to assist. The more parents who volunteer, the fewer times you are rostered on each term. If you use this service, we need your assistance in helping us to keep it running. Please contact the office and let us know of your availability.

Why is sport and physical exercise important?
Research shows unequivocally that fit, healthy, active people are stronger, happier, less stressed and more productive. People who participate in regular sport and exercise actually concentrate better, are less distracted, think more clearly, remain more positive and handle social relationship challenges better. For these people their immunity is better, they sleep better, they love better, they learn more, they remember more and they smile more.
Jesus answered, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.” (Luke 10:27). This verse highlights the important point that loving God and loving others requires our physical strength. This is why our school is full of sport. We want our girls to live life to the full, achieve success in their learning and be the best that they can be in their love and service of others. Sport and physical fitness inspires for life. What a gift!
Enjoy your sport!
School Uniform Concerns
These first three weeks of Term 2 are the changeover weeks from Summer to Winter uniform. So, depending on the weather, your child can wear either uniform to school. If their girls wear their green jumper, they must always wear their blazer over the top when travelling to and from school and in public. Winter uniform must be worn from Monday 15th May (start of week 4).
If your child is performing in the Infants Choir for Autumn Fair, Mrs Shannon-Duhuigg and Ms Webster has asked all students to wear their Summer uniform on the stage.
